Frequently Asked Questions

Who invented Filana Crayons?

Formulated by a retired Waldorf Teacher. After his career as a teacher he asked the Waldorf community what they thought was missing from the curriculum & he heard a resounding plea for paraffin-free artist grade beeswax crayons. He formulated what we celebrate now as Filana Beeswax Crayons.

What makes Filana so Great?

Filana Beeswax Crayons are made with our main ingredient Organic Beeswax, Natural Eco Soy Wax and a proprietary blend of plant based Organic waxes.

What does Filana mean?

It stems from Greek origin, meaning “lover of mankind,” and that's our guiding principle. What's good for children, good for you and good for the earth is our goal. We envision our initiative as an educational and artistic resource for teachers, families and children in North America and beyond.

What are Filana™ organic beeswax crayons made from?

Filana™ crayons are made with natural waxes and over 20% certified organic beeswax. We never use petroleum waxes or paraffin. All our ingredients are GMO free. Filana™ crayons contain a special blend of organic and natural petroleum-free waxes, FDA-approved organic and inorganic pigments, and kaolin clay.

Filana™ crayons conform to ASTM D-4236 standard, which indicates Filana™ crayons are certified nontoxic and meet or exceed specific quality standards. Filana™ crayons are CPSIA compliant. They have been tested by an independent laboratory and are certified to be compliant with the the CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act).

Why Organic?

Made from natural ingredients like beeswax and food-grade pigments, these crayons are non-toxic and free from harmful chemicals commonly found in conventional options, such as petroleum-based paraffin wax and synthetic dyes. This makes them much safer for toddlers and young kids who are prone to putting crayons in their mouths. Beeswax crayons are also hypoallergenic and gentle on sensitive skin, reducing the risk of irritation or allergic reactions.

Where are they made?

Each one of our crayons is hand-crafted in Langley, Washington. Our crayons are 100% made in the US.

Why do other manufacturers use paraffin and petroleum wax in their “beeswax” crayons?

It's cheap. A whole lot cheaper than beeswax and natural waxes. And it's readily available worldwide because it's used in so many industrial processes. The traditional paraffin crayon formula that Crayola, Stockmar, and other commercial manufacturers use was already common knowledge among manufacturing chemists by the 1930s. In the era of cheap oil and little or no ecological consciousness, paraffin crayons were a logical choice for commercial production.

How did you choose which colors to use for FILANA™ organic beeswax crayons?

We started with a six-color circle, first described by Goethe in his Theory of Colors. From there, we developed an equally-spaced 24-color circle, each color a radiant hue. We also added browns, pastels, white and black. Our colors are transparent and can be mixed to make an infinite number of colors.

The first thing that children say when they use them is often, “They’re so bright! I love these crayons!”

Are Filana™ Organic Beeswax Crayons non-toxic?

All Filana™ crayons have been evaluated by an independent toxicologist and found to contain no known toxic substances in sufficient quantities to be harmful to the human body, even if ingested or inhaled. Our crayons are not for children under 3 years of age, as crayons are a choking hazard. Please use with an appropriate level of supervision.
